Winter Homecoming

This post is dedicated to all who work outside in winter weather. I appreciate your dedication to animals, agriculture and essential services.

Orange bottom clouds scud across the evening sky carrying the last bits of sun and first flakes of snow. The wind howls in the tree tops like angry sea waves. My breath is swept away the minute it leaves my lips. Then icy daggers dive for my lungs in the inhale. I walk leaning into the wind coming from the west. The gale pushes so hard I misstep often but press on. Just a little further I see the lights, my goal. A wisp of smoke trails away from the chimney in a horizontal gray line. The smell of burning wood as tantalizing to the senses as any food. Warm, just a few freezing steps more, home!
